My characters – a black woman newspaper reporter in the 1980s,17th-century buccaneers in the Caribbean, and I, myself, straddling two centuries as I emigrated from San Francisco to Sicily to Britain to Portugal -- seem disparate.

 

However, in whatever time or place, they have one thing in common:

Their journey toward freedom.

MARCH FOR LOVE

She is nearly 40 and single. He is 23. She is keeping him a secret. Yvonne, an older black woman looking for love, interviewed Alex at a march for a more diverse university faculty on assignment for a San Francisco newspaper. After they begin dating, the school is bombed, and she worries that he may have done it.

 

Alex grew up in Senegal with his Peace Corps’ parents. Yvonne’s parents immigrated from Belize. The two share a passion for social justice.
